Some Traffic Tickets More Serious Than Others

While all traffic offenses are serious and can result in higher insurance rates and other issues, some are misdemeanors that can result in jail time.

Illinois traffic courts handle misdemeanor traffic offenses differently from violations that are punishable by fine only. You will be required to appear in court if the ticket is a misdemeanor. Here are examples of the most common misdemeanor traffic tickets in Illinois:

  • Driving on a suspended or revoked license
  • Drag racing
  • Reckless driving
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude the police
  • Driving a commercial vehicle while license is cancelled, suspended or revoked
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Speeding 26 to 34 miles an hour above the posted limit (Class B) & 35 or more (Class A) miles an hour above the posted limit

A misdemeanor traffic ticket is a criminal offense that can have significant consequences on your life:

  • Misdemeanor violations can be punished by a fine, jail time or both.
  • Your insurance rates may go up significantly.
  • You could face driver’s license suspension or revocation.
  • A misdemeanor traffic violation won’t come off your criminal record.
  • You could lose your job if you need to drive for your employment.

Some offenses, such as multiple DUI offenses, vehicular assault and vehicular homicide, are charged as felonies with even higher consequences. Whenever you face consequences such a jail time or permanent criminal record, it’s important to contact a defense lawyer as soon as possible.
